Cobbers Top Royals in Five Sets

MOORHEAD, Minn. –  The Bethel University volleyball team saw its three-match winning streak to the hands of Concordia College as the Cobbers bested the Royals in five sets Friday evening in Moorhead. Despite winning the first and fourth set, BU couldn't pull it out in the fifth falling by scores of 25-22, 21-25, 15-25, 25-21, 9-15.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
First Set
• The Royals notched 20 kills in the opening set hitting .302 at the net.
• An early back and forth finally saw BU open up 19-13 lead thanks to a five-point run.
• The Cobbers would get as close as 23-21 before the Royals put it away.
• Bethel's final three points came thanks to Dani Friedges who finished with nine kills in the set.

Second Set
• A 5-0 run for the Cobbers opened up a 11-6 advantage midway through the second.
• BU scored six of the next eight points pulling within one before the Concordia won five of the next six.
• A kill by Friedges and block assists from Natalie Hallstrom and Peyton Howie fended off two Cobber set points before CC closed the second with a kill winning it 25-21.

Third Set
• Concordia virtually led wire-to-wire in the third outside of an early 2-2 tie.
• BU was held to a .125 hitting percentage while the Cobbers downed 16 kills on 50 swins hitting .280.
 
Fourth Set
• BU trailed once in the set and never looked back after back-to-back Concordia attacking errors, one because of Peyton Howie block, put the Royals up 4-2.
• The Royals had built a six-point advantage before the teams traded off points.
• Friedges would put the finishing touches on the set as her 20th kill of the night forced a fifth and decisive set.
 
Fifth Set
• Concordia jumped out to a 4-1 lead before the Royals came out of timeout to get back within one at 5-4.
• The Cobbers widened the margin with four straight kills, one BU couldn't recover from.
• Kills by Abigial Drury and Friedges fended off two match points before a kill by the Cobbers gave them the set 15-9 and the match.

KEY PERFORMERS
• Dani Friedges – 22 kills, .352 hitting %, 17 digs
• Brenna Stark – 50 assists, 10 digs
• Devanie Andre – 17 digs, three service aces

UP NEXT
The Royals return to the Robertson Center tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 21 for a Senior Day match against St. Catherine at 7 p.m.
