DRAKE RELAYS
Joel Smith and Gabe Irons led the Royals at the prestigious Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday. Smith took 10th in the 400m hurdles while running a season best 52.41. That time is currently ranked 2nd in Division III.
Gabe Irons took 8th place and was the top Division I or II finisher in the discus. His best throw of 51.24m / 168'1" earned him a spot in the finals.
Smith teamed up with Jacob Parent, Tyler Sealock, and Lukas Walton to place 10th in the 4x400m relay. Their time of 3:15.68 was a season best by over 5 seconds and ranks the Royals 12th on the Division III honor roll.
Parent, after opening with a 48.17 split on the 4x4, came back shortly after to run the 400m. His time of 49.18 placed him 20th overall.
GUSTAVUS
David Myres continued his hot season in the hurdle races, winning the 110m hurdles in 15.07. Myres won the race by over half a second and was within 0.02 of his personal best. Freshman Jayson Ekiyor took a week away from his specialty - the 110m hurdles - and came away with a win in the 200m with a personal best time of 22.34. Senior Albert Smith took 7th in 23.63. Nathan Smith took 8th place in the 400m with a lifetime best 51.69.
The 4x400m relay team of Myres, Trokon Karngar, Abe Schlegel, and Clark Nelson combined for a time of 3:26.07, which placed them 2nd overall.
Freshman thrower Evan Larson placed in two different events. Larson took 6th in the hammer throw with a lifetime best 45.00m / 147'8", and was 7th in the shot put with a toss of 13.40m / 43'11.75". Sean Bjork took 7th place in the long jump with a leap of 6.10m / 20'0.25".
UP NEXT
The Royals enter the championships season next week as the decathletes will compete at the MIAC Multi on Thursday and Friday, May 5-6 at Carleton College. The majority of the team will compete on Friday, May 6th at the annual Meet of the Unsaintly hosted by Hamline University.
