ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – After battling tough conditions in the opening round, the Bethel University men's golf team shot a season-low round of 290 through the final 18 holes of the Augustana Invitational. The Royals jumped up five spots from round one finishing in a tie for fifth, out of 25 squads, with a season-36-hole best 601 (311-290).
The Royals led the field with 29 birdies and were first in par five scoring where they shot eight under.
Making their Bethel debuts,
Conor Schubring and
David Morton tied for sixth individually each shooting a 147.
Schubring was one over for most of the second day until he picked up a nice eagle on par-five second green. He finished the day bridie-par-bogey carding an one-under 71 for day two. He led the field with 28 pars and tied for second on par 3 scoring where he was even.
David Morton shot a 78 on day one before bouncing back with a three-under 69. He birdied four of his final six holes finishing the weekend with a field-leading 10 birdies. He was also second par 5 scoring for the weekend where he shot six under.
Freshman
Jacob Hall finished in a tie for 23rd one stroke shy of his career-best carding a 151. Shooting a 78 on day, he bested himself on day two with a 74. He began the second round birding the par-five sixth. Shooting one under on the back nine and then a birdie on the first green he was two-under for the day until finishing out with four straight bogeys.
Freshman
Jack Wellen and
Will Karkoc each rounded out BU's lineup finishing in a tie for 59th carding 157s. Wellen bounced back from an 80 in round one with a five-over 77 on day two thanks to a one-over on the back nine. Karkoc shot a nine-over 81 on day one before shaving off five strokes the next day. Behind three birdies on the final day he shot a four-over 76.
