Smith Wins 400H, Irons Sets Record in South Carolina

RESULTS

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Bethel Royals opened their 2022 outdoor season in the warmth of South Carolina last weekend. Bethel competed at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invite in Myrtle Beach, which featured 30 teams from NCAA Division I, II, III, and the NAIA.

Captains Joel Smith and Gabe Irons led the way for the Royals. Smith took home the victory in his signature event, the 400m hurdles. Smith won the race in 54.52, an early season time that currently ranks #1 in Division III.

Irons broke yet another record - the 5th of his career - this time in the shot put. His throw of 15.36m / 50'4.75" shattered the old record by nearly 2 feet, and placed him 6th overall. Irons also placed 4th in the discus with a throw of 47.44m / 155'8" and 7th in the hammer with his mark of 51.28m / 168'3".

Sophomore David Myres opened his outdoor campaign with two personal best performances. Myres took 4th overall in the 400m hurdles, winning his heat by 2.5 seconds. His time of 56.09 is a personal best by over a second. Myres also ran well in the 110m hurdles, running 15.63 for 16th place. Jacob Parent, fresh off competing at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, added another top 5 finish for Bethel. Parent ran 49.36 in the 400m for 5th place.

Noah Meissner was the top finisher for Bethel in the distance events over the weekend. Meissner ran a terrific debut in the 3000m steeplechase, taking 3rd place in 10:18.59. Aidan St. George took 7th place in the 10,000m run on Thursday night with a time just off his personal best - 33:18.76. Ike Mendel also competed well, taking 12th in the mile with a time of 4:27.43.

The Royals will continue training for their outdoor season back in Minnesota as classes resume this week. Bethel will compete next at Hamline University on Saturday, April 2nd.
