BLAINE, Minn. - The Bethel University women's hockey team was able to jump out to a 2-1 lead early in the second period but were unable to hold on as the Concordia College Cobbers scored the games final two goals to win 3-2. The game was tied at 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 after the second period but the Cobbers scored the lone goal of the third period holding off some late chances as the Royals pressed to score the game tying goal.
The Royals thought they had struck first with a goal four minutes in that was eventually disallowed. The Cobbers ended up with the games first goal at 7:04 in the first period. The Royals tied the game up at 12:37 in the first when Grace Halvorson won a battle on the boards for the puck behind the net and found Alex Belde for her first goal of the season. The second was all Bethel early on as the Royals took the lead when Emily Moore setup Lindsey Muntifering who snuck a long range shot by a pair of Cobber defenders and the goalie into the bottom corner of the net. Belde was also credited with an assist on the score. BU held an 18-9 shot advantage in the second period but the Cobbers were able to tie the game back up with a goal with just 2:02 remaining in the period. CC's game winner would come on a power play at 11:02 in the third period. The Royals employed an empty net in the final minute and a half and were able to get six shots on goal but were unable to find the back of the net.
The loss is the second one goal loss in the last three games for Bethel with the other contest being a tie. The Royals now stand at 6-9-1 and 4-5-1 in the MIAC. Concordia improved to 7-12-1 and 3-9-1. The two teams will finish the series Sunday afternoon with a 2 p.m. puck drop from Bethel University Arena.
