COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Senior quarterback Jaran Roste has been named a semifinalist for the prestigious Gagliardi Trophy, honoring the top Division III student-athlete in football, academics and community service.
 
Awarded annually since 1993, the Gagliardi Trophy is co-sponsored by Jostens and the J-Club of Saint John's (Minn.) and named for the late John Gagliardi, head football coach of Carroll College from 1949 to 1952 and Saint John's from 1953 to 2012.
 
The MIAC Offensive Player of the Year also became the just the 11th player in MIAC history to become a four-time All-MIAC honoree. A dynamic quarterback, the Alexandria, Minn. native threw for 2,018 yards with a MIAC-leading and top 15 nationally 69.7 completion percentage (152-218-6) during the regular season. He threw for 16 touchdowns while averaging 224.2 yards a game in the air. 
 
The other side of the dual threat was his 356 rushing yards on 48 carries. His MIAC leading 7.4 yards per carry paced him to four rushing touchdowns.
 
He is also good four a few punts here and there. He has booted it away four times this year in the regular season averaging 49.5 yards. While three made it inside the 20, two have trickled all the way down to the one-yard line.
 
A large component of the Gagliardi Trophy is off-field community service and academic work. Roste was named to the 2022 AFCA Allstate Good Works Team, while having invested significantly in the students within Bethel's BUILD program as a housing and student mentor (The BUILD program provides a supportive and comprehensive educational experience for students with intellectual disabilities). Having graduated last spring, Roste is currently pursuing his M.A. in Education K-12 with a special education concentration at Bethel and working as the interim BUILD residential supervisor for first year students.
 
He also has volunteered as a tax preparer for low-income families, worked with students who are six months or more behind grade level in reading and delivered individualized one-on-one tutoring twice a week through a structured curriculum. His organizational volunteering includes Feed My Starving Children, Special Olympics MN and the Salvation Army among others.

The Gagliardi Trophy finalists will be announced during a live show on Wednesday, Dec. 7, on D3football.com. Hosts Pat Coleman and Frank Rossi will profile the finalists during the program. The 2022 Gagliardi Trophy winner will be revealed on D3football.com during the week of the NCAA Division III football national championship on Friday, Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. CT. In the lead up to the announcement of the 2022 Gagliardi Trophy winner, D3football.com and the J-Club Twitter account (@JClubSJU) will provide updates on specific dates and times of the announcement.

Nominations were submitted by colleges across the country, and the semifinalists were selected by the J-Club Board of Directors. In past years, up to fifteen semifinalists have been named. The Gagliardi Trophy national-selection committee is comprised of 16 Division III coaches (four from each NCAA Region), four Division III administrators, eight regional notable voters (two from each region, and eight National voters with Division III backgrounds. A fan vote, which runs until Dec. 3, will be live soon on D3football.com. No J-Club members vote as part of the national-selection committee.
