Baseball Takes Crucial Series Opener over Macalester

uST. PAUL, Minn. – Every sports fan knows that getting the first win in a best-of-three series is crucial. The Bethel University baseball team took care of business Friday afternoon with four runs through the final three frames defeating Macalester, 7-4.

The winner of this best-of-three series will earn a spot in the MIAC Playoffs. Game two and the if-necessary game takes place Sunday at Hargis Park. First pitch is 1 p.m. and if Macalester takes Sunday's first game a decisive game three will take place after.

In the seventh, Marcus Krupke drove in the eventual game-winning runs with clutch two out hitting. His double to right center drove in Kennan Hodgkin and James Woelfel giving BU back the lead at 5-4.

Thomas Friesen's RBI single to left gave BU a two-run lead in the eighth before Nick Kulseth added an insurance run in the ninth.

Matthew Bohlke picked up the win on the mound tossing six innings of work where he gave up four runs, walked none and struck out six.

After giving Bethel the lead, Krupke came on to pitch the final 1.2 innings shutting out the Scots while allowing no hits and striking out four.

Ty Kohen's two RBI single in the fifth gave BU a 3-1 advantage before Macalester scored two in the home half of the fifth and one in the sixth.

Matthew Carlsen led the charge at the plate going 3-for-6 with a triple and two runs.
