ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – A bases loaded walk-off single off the left field fence from the bat of
Caleb Brandt gave the Bethel University baseball team a 5-4 victory over Macalester Sunday afternoon. The win puts the Royals in the MIAC Playoffs for the third time in four seasons and is their eighth overall appearance.
Bethel earned the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will travel to Collegeville on Wednesday taking on fourth-seeded Saint John's at 3 p.m.
Macalester took an early lead with homers from Michael Moreno in the second and fourth. The Royals were hitless until the fifth with a single to left from
James Woelfel before BU stranded a pair.
Bethel broke through on the scoreboard taking a 3-2 lead as
Ty Koehn blasted one over the fence just inside the right field foul pole.
It had been a pitcher's duel a majority of the game, as
Marcus Krupke went the distance with a complete game effort.
Down to their final out, the Scots snuck a single through the left side keeping the inning alive. The first pitch of the next at bat MAC launched a two-run homer putting them back on top.
The Royals offense showed no panic with three straight singles, two of which came via bunts, to begin the ninth. Koehn was then hit by a pitch bringing in the tying run before Brandt worked his magic scoring
Nick Wibben for the game-winning run.
