Success to Stand By, Women's Soccer Ready to be Back on the Pitch

| By:

Coach Ben Linder and the Bethel University women’s soccer team ended last year’s regular season 14-6 and they wanted to keep that energy rolling into the 2020 fall season. Then when the coronavirus hit Bethel’s campus last spring cancelations were made athletically as well as academically and have continued to force postponements for all Bethel sports.

Despite recent challenges due to the pandemic, coach Linder and the Royals are ready to be back on the pitch as the open up the abbreviated season Tuesday, April 6 against Concordia. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. and will take place on the campus of the University of Northwestern.

Fans who can not make Tuesday's match may watch it live on the BU Royals Sport Network.

We have a great mix of talented, competitive players who lead and serve one another in a way that I think is unique. As cliche as it sounds, we are a family. They really rallied around each other, supported each other and were patient and flexible with how the season went. I really felt like this fall went better than expected. Our goal as a team is to be a team that competes hard, loves each other and shows grace to one another and I really saw that over the course of the fall.

After having such a successful 2019 season the team lost four seniors but the team wanted to continue the culture and goals that had been put in place. With the amount of time after last season's ending and the postponement of the 2020 fall season keeping that culture and success going could be a struggle for any team.

Lauren Davis, junior forward explained that, “It is always a challenge adjusting to losing impactful players to graduation, but we have had multiple players step into leadership roles. I think a major part of building on our success can be attributed to the overall positivity and dedication that we have established within our team culture.”

Having more time in between seasons has allowed teams to bring in freshman and get them used to college play. Not being able to compete this fall as usually scheduled has been a weird change for athletes in the MIAC but teams found some of the positives to having more practice time. But now it’s time to get back to competition.

The season being postponed to spring has been nice, honestly. It gave our freshmen a chance to adjust to the college speed of play and hit the weight room.
