Royals Hold off Carleton in Opener, Game Two Halted in Ninth

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Bethel University baseball team kicked off a stretch of seven games in seven days Monday afternoon at Carleton. Bethel took the series opener 6-4 before leading 8-6 in game two heading into the bottom of the ninth before the game was halted due to darkness.

Thomas Friesen and Marcus Krupke each had multi-RBI days in the opener while James Woelfel went a combined 3-for-6 driving in three runs and crossing the plate four times himself.

Game 1: Bethel 6, Carleton 4
Friesen broke the scoreless tie in the third with a single through the right-side scoring Caleb Brandt. Brandt reach on a two-out single up the middle before moving into scoring position on a pair of wild pitches.

The Royals went up 3-0 when Krupke drove in a pair on a single to left. A run in the fifth expanded the lead to four.

Matthew Bohlke was lights out giving up one hit through four innings. A hit by pitch though to kick off the fifth allowed the Knights to put up a three spot before BU went to the bullpen. Blake Williams got the Royals out of the jam with a groundout.

Woelfel lead off the sixth blasting his first home run of the season. Krupke came in scoring BU's sixth run on a sacrifice fly from Brandt.

Carleton sparked a rally in the ninth cutting it to 6-4. Out of the pen Bryce DeLay picked up a pair of strikeouts for the save and forcing a pair of runners to be stranded in scoring position.

Game 2: Bethel 8, Carleton 6 // Bottom of 9th – in progress
Carleton took a 3-0 lead in its opening at bat. Bethel came back with two in the second before Woelfel kicked off a four-run third with a two-run double.

Starter Marcus Krupke went 6.2 innings giving up six runs, which included a run in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Leading 7-6 headed into the ninth, Keenan Hodgkin tripled to left before scoring on an error by the third baseman.
