ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bethel University softball team matched a program single-game record seven stole bases in its 13-1 shortened game victory in the opener at Macalester.
Bethel completed the sweep in the nightcap thanks to a multi-RBI game from
Allie Fauth and
Cortney Hokanson, 9-5.
Hokanson led the Royals going a combined 4-for-7 while driving in four runs on a double and home run.
Game 1: Bethel 13, Macalester 1 // 5 innings
The Royals got off to a hot start putting up four runs in their first plate appearance.
Kayla Simacek gave up her first run in four games as Macalester drove in a run with back-to-back doubles in the third. Simacek struck out eight on the day giving up three hits and improved to 13-4 in the circle.
A sacrifice fly by Fauth made it 5-1 Bethel before the bats came alive in the fifth.
Carli Botten and
Amanda Gemuenden each drove in a pair of runs as part of the Royals eight-run inning.
On the basepaths, Fauth and Gemuenden each stole a pair of bags while
Lexi DeBace,
Angela Dabu and Botten each picked up one.
Game 2: Bethel 9, Macalester 5
Bethel extended its first at bat thanks to an error from the Scots. Taking advantage of the opportunity Geumuenden scored on another MAC error before
Kayla Hokanson singled up the middling scoring
Jamie Axelberg.
A three-run second was highlighted by
Cortney Hokanson's third home run of the year sending a two-run shot over the right-center wall.
Macalester tied it up with a five spot in the third. The Royals took the lead back though on a RBI double from Gemuenden.
A three spot in the fifth added insurance as Simacek entered the circle for the final four innings giving up no runs, two hits and striking out eight.

Bethel is set to close out the MIAC portion of its 2021 schedule Saturday at Ona Orth against Augsburg. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The Royals will also honor their senior class at the conclusion of game two.
