EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – It came down to a pair of third-set tie breakers in singles play as the Bethel University women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to Wisconsin-Whitewater Sunday afternoon, 5-4.
Bethel (4-3) led 2-1 going into singles plays thanks to wins from its top doubles duo
Grace Riermann and
Maggie Riermann and No. 3 doubles pair of
Ingrid Goldstrand and
Rylee Schurman.
The Warhawks (4-5) took the first three single's points before
Grace Riermann tallied a win at No. 1 singles in straight sets. At No. 3 singles
Mackenzie Novak took a third-set tiebraker 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 leaving it all down to
Maggie Riermann. She took the opening set 6-4 before dropping the second 4-6. It came down to the wire as UW-Whitewater's Paige Nierman squeaked out win in the tiebreaker 11-9.
Up next, the Royals host their first outdoor meet of the year against Hamline at 4:30 p.m. In accordance with Bethel Athletic's spectator policy, Bethel University student-athletes will be allotted three pre-assigned tickets and visiting teams will be allotted a total of 20 registered spectators.
