Third Quarter Run Not Enough for Royals at Concordia

MOORHEAD, Minn. – A late comeback by the Bethel University women's basketball team came up just short Sunday evening in Moorhead. A game-tying three from Emma Schultz hit back iron barley missing as time expired and handing the Royals a 65-62 defeat to the Cobbers.

Bethel had three players in double-digit scoring figures led by Elizabeth Schwarz's team-high 13 points. Kat Brown-Erdal and Michaela Craigan each chipped in 11 points respectively. On the boards, Schwarz added seven – three of which came on the offensive end – while Makenna Pearson added six.

Trailing by one, a costly turnover by Bethel (1-3, 1-1 MIAC) led to a pair of makes at the charity stripe on the other end putting Concordia (2-2, 2-0 MIAC) up 65-62 with 24 seconds remaining. A pair of missed layups each resulted in offensive rebounds for the Royals.

A three-ball from Brown-Erdal with eight seconds left rimmed in and out after coming off the glass before a tie up ensued on the rebound. With four seconds remaining and the possession arrow in favor of the Royals, BU's inbound play opened up a look for Schultz from the left wing barely missing.

A sloppy start by the Bethel offensive put the Royals down five after the opening quarter. While Bethel began to find its flow in the second quarter, they went into the break trailing 31-22.

BU needed a big quarter to spark a comeback and that's exactly what they got in the third. Craigan knocked down one of her career-high three treys putting the Royals within three.

Taking advantage of being in the bonus for the final 4:14 of the third, BU went 10-for-12 from the charity stripe gaining its first lead since the first quarter.

Concordia responded in the fourth outscoring the Royals by a narrow 22-18 margin, including 10 of the game's last 12 points.

The Royals forced CC into 15 turnovers turning it into 18 points on the other end. Bella Williams led the way with seven takeaways.

Up next is another tough MIAC contest for the Royals, traveling to Augsburg Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip.
