ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Junior forward
Jaren Tschetter poured in a career-high 19 points large in part to hitting four shots behind the arc. Despite a strong offensive effort behind the arc where Bethel shot 42.9 percent (9-of-21), Saint Mary's used a late second half run to defeat BU 66-58 in non-conference action.
Bethel had two other players in double digit scoring figures with
Isaiah Carver-Bagley chipping in 13 points and
Chandler Wellman filling the stat sheet with 12 points, three rebounds and five assists. Freshman
Joey Kidder played every second of Saturday's contest adding four assists and a pair of steals.
A 3-pointer from
Thunder Heyer at the 6:29 mark gave Bethel (1-3) a 58-51 lead before the Royals went ice cold from the field. Saint Mary's (4-1) standouts Eli Cave and Raheem Anthony guided the Cardinals on a 15-0 run to close out the game.
Things started hot with Bethel leading the opening 11 minutes where Tschetter hit three attempts from downtown. The Cardinals chipped into the margin in what was an offensive first half that saw both teams shoot over 44 percent.
BU only turned it over five times in the opening 20 minutes but went into the locker room knotted with SMU at 33.
The Royals lead by seven on two occasions in the second until the pesky SMU defense forced the Royals into 11 turnovers and kept them off the foul line. Saint Mary's Eli Cave took over from there scoring 12 of his game-high 24 points down the final stretch.
A quick turnaround puts the Royals back on their home floor Monday when they welcome Concordia in MIAC play. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
