Power Play Goals Lead Royals to 2-2 Tie, St. Olaf Earns Extra Point in Shootout

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore Josiah Roen and Michael Piehler each tallied a power play goal in the Bethel University men's hockey team's 2-2 tie with St. Olaf Saturday evening in Northfield. The Oles gained the extra point in the MIAC standings winning the sudden death shootout in four rounds.

The Royals enter the bye week with a 6-13-4 overall record and 5-5-4 MIAC mark where it sits in fifth place with 20 points. Bethel closes out the regular season against Gustavus Adolphus with the series and regular season finale on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Bethel University Arena.

St. Olaf took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission scoring 31 seconds before the horn. Unsuccessful on its first two power plays, the Royals connected on its third man advantage where Roen scored his team-leading 10th goal of the year. Jarrett Cammarata and Brandon Baker each picked up assists on the second period goal at the 12:28 mark.

Netminder Ridge Gerads got the start in net picking up 32 saves and keeping the Oles off the board in the second with 12 saves.

The Oles took the lead back 6:52 into the third before Michael Piehler found the equalizer on the man advantage with under three minutes to go.

Both teams had solid looks in the overtime while BU was able to escape the 5-on-5 overtime with a pair of blocked shots while on the kill. The PK carried over into the 3-on-3 overtime where neither team found the back of the net.

In the sudden death shootout, Cammarata had Bethel's only successful attempt before the Oles sneaked one past Gerads in the fourth round.
