ST. PETER, Minn. – A five goal second period went against the Bethel University men's hockey team Friday evening as they fell to Gustavus Adolphus on the road, 6-1.
The win locked the Gusties into a MIAC Playoff spot while a win by St. Thomas at Augsburg ended any hopes of the Royals finding a spot in the postseason. Bethel (6-14-4, 5-6-4 MIAC) closes out the regular season tomorrow against Gustavus at Bethel University Arena. Prior to puck drop the Royals will honor their seniors in a brief pregame ceremony.
Gustavus struck first blood scoring 2:12 into the contest testing starting netminder
Joe Sheppard early. The Royals had good looks on their first power play but were unable to tie things up.
The MIAC's leading penalty kill in conference games went to work late in the first before
Michael Piehler (
Josiah Roen) lit up the lamp with one second remaining before the first intermission.
The Gusties wasted no time out of the break starting their string of five straight 40 seconds into the second period.
Ridge Gerads came in net for the final 32 minutes allowing one goal and 14 saves. Gerads stopped all seven shots in the third period. The Royals outshot the GAC 11-7 and was unsuccessful on the power play.
