BLAINE, Minn. – Jarrett Cammarata's empty net goal with 1:04 remaining in the overtime period helped the Bethel University men's hockey team end its season on a high note with a 2-1 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College.
The win helps Bethel record its best overall winning-percentage since 2011-12 at 7-14-4 (.360) and its best conference mark at 6-6-4 (.500) since 2009-10. Cammarata's goal gave the rookie his team-leading 16th point of the season.
Out of a timeout by both teams and 1:46 remaining in overtime, Gustavus came on the ice with an extra attacker. The Gusties won the ensuing faceoff firing one on net which netminder
Joe Sheppard stopped.
Michael Piehler got the puck past a Gustie, where
Dylan Giorgio pushed it to neutral ice to Cammarata. Just inside the blue line he fired a wrister into the back of an empty Gustavus net sending Bethel home with three points in its final contest of the year.
After two scoreless periods, GAC was outshooting BU 26-21 but both goaltenders held strong throughout. Sheppard, in his final debut as a Royal, had one of his strongest performances with 40 saves.
Gustavus broke through on the scoreboard 2:15 into the third. The Royals showed no panic as
Nick Ketola tied it from point blank range.
Josiah Roen's shot a few seconds before made it behind the net before Roen sent it back to the front of the net where senior
Johan Kling fed it to Ketola for the equalizer.
