MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team came up just short in Friday night's opener against Concordia falling to the Cobbers 2-1.
Concordia broke the scoreless tie just over midway through the first. Bethel's special teams fended off two penalty kills in the opening period taking a one goal deficit into the first intermission.
Dylan Giorgio broke the scoreless tie with his second goal of the season 1:38 into the second period. This came after
Jarrett Cammarata hit the pipe a mere 23 seconds earlier while BU was on the power play. Cammarata and Brandon Barker each assisted Giorgio goal five seconds off the power play.
Concordia regained the lead about six minutes later scoring off a faceoff win. BU tested Concordia netminder Jacob Stephan but went into the break trailing once again.
The Royals held the edge on shots 10-6 in the final period but were unsuccessful on their final two power plays. Bethel added the extra attacker in the final minute but Stephan had two saves before Baker's shot with three seconds left was blocked.
Netminder
Joe Sheppard kept the Cobbers off the scoreboard in the third finishing the game with 33 saves.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow in Moorhead with a 2 p.m. puck drop.
