Early Pair of Power Play Goals Enough for Cardinals to Beat Bethel

BLAINE, Minn. - The Bethel University women's hockey team could not complete the MIAC series sweep of Saint Mary's, falling 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Bethel University Arena. The Royals doubled the Cardinals shot total, 40-20 but SMU doubled the Royals goal output at 2-1. Both of SMU's scores came on power plays in the first period.

The Cardinals got off just five shots on goal in the first period but their first two shots of the game were goals. Bethel's penalty kill had allowed just five goals in 55 attempts coming in, good for the third best percentage in the MIAC. The Royals fired off 13 shots in the first period and picked up there lone score at 14:11 when Annika Swanson found the back of the net. Bri Stafne and Emma Ness assisted on the score. Bethel was unable to get the game tying goal despite several good opportunities, including a flurry of attempts in the final minute after pulling goalie Baleigh Shuck for the extra skater.

The loss drops Bethel to 5-12 on the season and 3-7 in the MIAC. Saint Mary's stands at 6-9-2 and 3-6-1. Bethel will host the Cobbers of Concordia College next Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday 2 p.m.).
