BLAINE, Minn. - The Bethel University women's hockey team rebounded from a 7-1 defeat on Friday night with a 2-0 win over the visiting Cobbers of Concordia College on Saturday afternoon. The Royals and Cobbers entered the MIAC series with the exact same overall and MIAC records and leave the series with still identical records of 6-13 overall and 4-8 in the MIAC.
Friday
In a very unusual game the Royals out shot the Cobbers 40-15 and spent just over 11 minutes on the power play to just 1:05 for Concordia. Unfortunately for Bethel the most important category was just as lopsided, but in the Cobbers favor with the 7-1 score. Concordia grabbed a 3-1 lead after the first period, scoring their three goals on just four shots on net. After a scoreless second period, Concordia scored four times in the third, one on an empty net, for the 7-1 final. A physical contest saw the Cobbers whistled for seven penalties to two on Bethel. The Royals were 0-6 on their power play opportunities while the Cobbers went scoreless in just over a minute on the power play.
Saturday
Bethel showed great resolve on Saturday, especially goaltender
Mallory Tidona, in rebounding from Friday's disappointment and grabbing a 2-0 shutout win over the Cobbers. Tidona made 27 saves in recording her third shutout of the season, one night after allowing a career high six goals. Tidona made a game high 12 saves in the third period in keeping the Cobbers off the scoreboard. Bethel's first goal came at 6:46 in the first period when
Bailey Thompson fired a shot off the shoulder of the Cobbers goaltender and
Bri Stafne was able to knock the deflection into the net to put the Royals up in the first period. The final score came from
Kennedi Mitchell on an empty net with 38 seconds remaining.
The series split is a common occorance with the Royals. Neither Bethel nor Concordia has swept the other in a MIAC series since the Royals swept the Cobbers in February of 2016. That previous series sweep prior to 2016 came back in December of 2010 when Bethel also swept the Cobbers. 2008 marks the last Concordia swept Bethel. Bethel now turns its attention to winless St. Olaf as the Royals will travel to Northfield on Friday evening before hosting the Oles on Saturday afternoon.
