Four Goal Third Period Lifts Royals to MIAC Sweep of Saint Mary’s

WINONA, Minn. – A wild third period saw the Bethel University men's hockey team score four answered goals, leading the Royals to a 5-3 victory and conference sweep of Saint Mary's Saturday night.

Picking up their first conference sweep since the 2012-13 season, the Royals improve to 5-11-3 surpassing the four-win mark for the first time since 2012-13. At 4-3-3 in the MIAC, BU sits in a three-way tie for second with St. Thomas and Gustavus Adolphus at 16 points.

Josiah Roen put the icing on the cake with a pair of late third period goals, his first coming on the penalty kill which held up as the game-winner and an empty netter in the final minute.

Just as they did in the opener, Saint Mary's struck first, but in déjà vu fashion from Friday the lead didn't last long as Brandon Baker scored his first of the season to tie it up. BU's leading point scorer Jarrett Cammarata tallied his first assist of the night while Roen picked up the secondary assist beginning his three point night.

The Cardinals scored twice on the power play in the second period while holding the Royals to four shots for a 3-1 lead. Bethel came out of the second intermission on a mission to make the comeback. Netminder Joe Sheppard was on a tear again keeping SMU off the board in the third where eight of his 26 saves came.

Luke Posner (Baker and Cammarata) scored 11 second into the Royals being 5-on-3 after a five minute boarding and two minute cross check by SMU. Still on the man advantage, Nick Ketola scored his third goal of the series 58 seconds after Posner tying it up at 3-3.

The Royals went on the penalty kill with 4:55 remaining after Michael Piehler was whistled for cross-checking. BU picked up a pair of blocked shots before Roen skated down ice giving BU the lead with a short handed goal and 30 seconds left on the kill.

Sheppard made four big saves before Roen tallied the empty net goal with 43 seconds to go.
