BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the University of Wisconsin-Stout Friday evening inside Bethel University Arena.
Surrendering three unanswered goals in the third and overtime period, Bethel falls to 3-9-2 on the season. The Royals conclude non-conference play tomorrow at Wisconsin-River Falls. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
BU's top line led the scoring charge with forward
Josiah Roen tallying his team-leading sixth goal of the year and defenseman
Johan Kling scoring his second of the season. Freshman forward
Dylan Giorgio picked up the primary assist on both goals moving his season total to seven.
The Royals took advantage of their first power play late in the first period. Scoring his second power play goal of the season, Kling went coast-to-coast before sneaking it through the wickets of the Blue Devils' goaltender. Freshman
Jarrett Cammarata won the face off in the Royals zone pushing it to Giorgio who picked up his first assist of the night with a tape-to-tape pass to Kling.
Bethel fended off its first penalty kill of the night where
Ridge Gerads picked up a pair of saves and Giorgio almost came away with a shorthanded goal. It looked as if Bethel was going to take a one goal lead after not scoring on two power play opportunities, but with five seconds left Roen found the top shelf giving the Royals a two goal lead.
UW-Stout cut the BU lead in half with a goal just under seven minutes into the third. It took 22 shots to break Gerads but a rebound tap in off a shot from just inside the blue line snuck its way past the Royals netminder. The Blue Devils added an extra attacker with 40 seconds remaining and came away with the tying goal with just under 29 seconds left.
In the overtime period, Bethel had two good looks before UW-Stout came away with it in the neutral zone. They only had to beat one defender scoring the game winner 1:56 into the extra period.
