NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Bethel University women's tennis team suffered its first loss in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Sunday afternoon at the hands of No. 35 Carleton College. The 7-2 loss to the Knights comes after Royals defeat St. Catherine Friday evening, 7-2.
The 38th-ranked Royals saw their six match winning streak snapped and are now 15-3 on the year and 5-1 in MIAC play. Bethel will host its first outdoor meet of the season Tuesday against Macalester College at Ona Orth Athletic Complex beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Bethel went into singles play trailing 2-1 after
Mackenzie Novak and
Jill Weinzettel recorded the Royals only doubles point with an 8-7 victory.
Weinzettel went on to pick up the only singles point for BU defeating Madeline Prins 6-4, 7-5. In a top-10 singles regional battle, No. 9
Grace Riermann took No. 8 Sonya Romaneko into a tiebreaker set after Riermann took set one 6-1 before Romaneko took set two by an identical score and the tiebreaker 10-5.
Maggie Riermann at No. 2 singles battled until the end against Jeanny Zhang. Riermann took the opener 6-3 before dropping the second set. Zhang came away with the win taking the tiebreaker 10-8.
Carleton took the No. 3, 5 and 6 singles in straight sets.
Friday: #38 Bethel 7, St. Catherine 2
Bethel matched its longest winning streak of the season at six by defeating the Wildcats Friday evening at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The Royals took a 2-1 lead into singles play after winning the top two doubles matches by a scores of 8-2 each.
Bethel dominated singles play taking the top four singles matches in straight sets.
Sydney Rott closed out the evening with a comeback three set win at No. 5 singles 1-6, 6-0, 10-4.
