BLAINE, Minn. – After a series opening loss last night in St. Cloud, the Bethel University men's hockey team skated with the Johnnies in the series finale. The two teams came away with a 3-3 tie while Saint John's picked up the extra point on a goal 13 seconds into the 3-on-3 overtime.
Earning a point in the standings BU goes to 0-1-1 in the MIAC and 1-1-1 overall. The Royals are back on home ice next Friday hosting Northland College before taking on top-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday.
Bethel's third line had itself a night with
Dylan Giorgio scoring a goal,
Curtis Hansen picking up two assists and
Jory McWilliams collecting an assist.
Both teams were kept off the scoreboard despite a busy third period in the box that saw a combined 41 penalty minutes including a game misconduct on each team. The overtime period was just as aggressive with the shots ringing even at 16-16 through the final 25 minutes.
Bethel took a tripping penalty that carried over into the 3-on-3 overtime which allowed a man advantage for the Johnnies where they scored gaining the extra point.
The streak of freshman scoring continued as
Dylan Giorgio gave Bethel a 1-0 lead 4:39 into the first. Hansen made a nice feed to Giorgio from behind breaking the scoreless tie. Hansen wasted no time picking up his second assist of the night helping
Josiah Roen score on the power play with just over two minutes left in the opening period.
SJU responded out of the first break with a power play and even strength goal tying it at 2-2.
Josiah Roen controlled it outside the Royals zone skating the other where before his shot bounced off the boards and right to
Nick Ketola who put in the go-ahead goal.
It looked as if the Royals were going to take a one goal lead into the third but with just over 90 seconds left the Johnnies tied it up a 3-3.
