ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bethel University women's soccer team saw its historic season come to a close in the MIAC Semifinals falling to 19th-ranked St. Thomas 3-0 on a chilly fall afternoon. The second-seeded Tommies kept the sixth-seed Royals out of the shot column and used two second half goals to advance to Saturday's championships match.
Bethel finishes the year with a 14-6 record which goes down in the program record books as the most wins in a single season. Despite being kept off the scoreboard today the Royals tallied 59 goals this season which is also a single-season record surpassing their previous mark of 56 which was tallied in 2009. Allowing only 15 goals this season the Royals tie the program record from 2009.
The Tommies broke the scoreless tie in the 31st minute as goalkeeper
Kaylee Peterson made a diving save which UST then tapped in the loose rebound. In the 66th minute, Bethel was unable to clear out a ball as a shot went right through traffic and into the back of the net. UST's third goal came late in the second half on a penalty kick.
Peterson had seven saves on the day bringing her career total to 209 placing her fifth all-time. She will leave Arden Hills with a career goals against average of 0.95 and holds the single-season record for shutouts with 10.
Among other notable accomplishments this year, the Royals had the best start in program history at 8-0. They also recorded the program single-season record for most shutouts in a season with 12. It was also the first time in program history in which BU had three goal scorers reach double digits.
Rachel Waterman led the way with 14,
Sophie Kendall had 12 and
Lauren Davis tallied 11.
Individually, Waterman's 14 goals ties Lauren Johnson's (2005) and Brittany Griffore's (2009) single-season record. Senior
Brooke Ogne departs ninth all-time on the Royals point scoring list with 18 goals and 16 assists for 52 career points. Her 16 assists ties
Maggie Sipe for third all-time and the 18 goals ranks 10th.
