NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Bethel University women's soccer team continues to match records from the 2018 season and two more were reached in the Royals 1-0 shutout of St. Olaf Saturday in Northfield.
Junior
Sophie Kendall scored her team-leading 12th goal of the year – doubling her combined goal total as an underclassman – in the 42nd minute helping Bethel match its program-record for wins in a season with 13.
Improving to 13-3 on the year, Bethel has now had 12 of its 13 victories come in shutout fashion. Matching its program-best five shutouts in conference play the Royals are 6-3 heading into the final two matches of the season.
The Royals take on Saint Benedict Wednesday for senior day at 3:30 p.m.
Senior goalkeeper
Kaylee Peterson matched the program's individual shutout record for MIAC games with five. That also moves her into sole possession of third all-time in the MIAC record books for conference game shutouts. Peterson collected five saves moving her into seventh all-time in the Bethel record books with 163 career saves.
Both teams came out of the gate testing each opposing goalkeeper from the very start. In an evenly played first half that saw the shots rang even at 10-10, Bethel went into the break with a bit of an edge thanks to Kendall.
Just outside the box on the left side, Kendall came in and swooped up the ball from a St. Olaf defender. She made a nifty move with a defender on her back taking a pair of touches to get the proper angle. Once she saw daylight Kendall fired off a right-footed shot from 28 yards out that went right over the Oles' keeper.
The goal was Bethel's 55th of the year and puts them one shy of typing the program record that was recorded in 2009.
The defense did its job like usual only allowing the Oles to only have four shots in the second half, two of which were on goal. Bethel forced no second half corner kicks for St. Olaf.
