Augsburg Comeback Efforts to Much for Bethel, Fall in Five Sets

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Déjà vu of last year's MIAC Playoff quarterfinals hit the Bethel University volleyball team Saturday afternoon dropping a five-set match to No. 13th-ranked Augsburg for the second consecutive time. Bethel took the first two sets before Augsburg rallied back to win by scores of 26-28, 20-25, 25-16, 25-23, 15-11 in a match that featured 31 ties and 14 lead changes.

Now 15-10 for the season and 4-5 in the MIAC, Bethel looks to snap its five-match losing streak Wednesday at Concordia. Start time is set for 7 p.m.

Junior Allie Fauth had her fourth double-double effort of the season with 10 kills and a match-high 24 digs. Junior Macie Gavic matched a career-high 15 kills hitting .216 for the match while junior Maria Claflin knocked down 13 kills.

Bethel set the tone taking a tight first set 28-26. A strong sideout percentage along with 18 kills, five of which came from Gavic, helped Bethel hold off the Auggies. The Royals went up two sets forcing Augsburg to hit a mere .081 in the second. What was a two-point lead opened up to eight at 16-8 due in part to a BU 6-0 run. A service ace from Fauth followed by a forced attacking error put the Royals in good position to upset the No. 13th ranked team in the nation.

The Auggies hit .289 compared to Bethel's .093 taking the third. Bethel gathered themselves in the fourth but never held a lead. The Royals overcame a five point defect tying it up at 23-23 but back-to-back kills from the Auggies forced a fifth and decisive set.

Neither team held a lead of more than two until 10-7 in BU's favor. Augsburg came back with three straight before a kill from Gavic made it 11-10. Five straight for Augsburg gave them their third straight win over the Royals.
