Schwarz Nets Career-High 16 Points in Loss to Augsburg

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – In a game that saw six ties and 10 lead changes, the Bethel University women's basketball fourth quarter comeback efforts fell short to Augsburg Wednesday evening at the Robertson Center, 74-67.

Bethel shook off a slow first quarter by outscoring the Auggies 23-19 in the second to take a 32-29 lead into the break. An offensive third quarter by Augsburg snapped the Royals six game winning streak as they slip to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in MIAC play. Bethel closes out the week on the road at Concordia Saturday afternoon with tip-off set for 1 p.m.

Sophomore Elizabeth Schwarz scored a career-high 16 points off the bench. Junior forward Taite Anderson registered 15 points while Junior Haylee Barker was right behind her with 13. Senior Hannah Johnson grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, all of which came on the defensive end.

Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net during a four minute stretch in the first. The Royals used the inside game to take a marginal 9-8 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.

Back-to-back layups from Tessah Anderson and Johnson gave BU their largest lead of the game at 15-8 with 7:52 left in the second. Augsburg regained the lead midway through but the Royals took advantage of turnovers to gain a five point lead at the half.

The Auggies came out of the break hot from the field outscoring Bethel 21-11 on 7-of-12 shooting in the third quarter. Augsburg opened up its lead to 68-56 with 3:11 remaining in the game with a 3-point play from Camryn Speese.

The Royals chipped away at the deficit as a layup from Barker with just under a minute to go pulled them within six. Augsburg did the rest of their work from the charity stripe to remain perfect in conference play.

Bethel held the edge inside outscoring the Auggies 46-22 on points in the paint on top of holding the rebound margin 36-23.
