The Bethel University women's hockey team put up a valiant effort Saturday afternoon and came away with a 4-4 tie against No. 7 Hamline University. The tie gives Bethel one point in the MIAC standings as the Pipers, who stand in second place, took three of the four points on the weekend after Friday's 4-1 decision.
Saturday, Bethel 4, Hamline 4 (OT)
Bethel built a two-goal lead in the second period, scoring four times in all during the second, but the Pipers where able to take advantage of two power play opportunities in the third period to erase Bethel's lead. HU put up 58 shots in the game but once again Royal freshman goalie
Mallory Tidona was outstanding in net, making a career high 54 saves.
Hamline scored the games first goal at 13:10 in the first period to take the early lead. BU was able to get on the board with a short-handed goal by
Bailey Thompson from
Grace Halvorson early in the second. Thompson scored again, this time on a Bethel power play, at 9:20 in the second to put Bethel up for the first time.
Bri Stafne assisted Thompson. The Royals third goal came just under two minutes later by
Kaylyn Forliti from
Sarina Goos and Bethel had their first two goal lead. Hamline and NCAA DIII scoring leader Bre Simon where able to get a controversial goal at 17:21 in the second. Simon was on a breakaway with a Royal defender on her side when putting a shot into the body of Tidona as Simon crashed into Tidona and both went into the net. The official ruled that the puck went into the net as well to make the score 3-2. Bethel was not done scoring in the second however, as
Payton Olson scored just a minute after Simon's score to put BU back up by two at 4-2. Goos and Forliti assisted Olson. The Royals were able to outscore Hamline 4-1 in the second period despite being outshot 25-8.
The third period saw the Pipers be the beneficiaries of a pair of penalties called on the Royals to allow them two power plays they would take advantage of. The first came off a hooking call on Bethel and HU scored at 2:36 in the third. An interference penalty gave Hamline their next penalty at 9:34 in the third and the Pipers scored at 10:28 to tie the game. The game would go scoreless the rest of the way in regulation and again in the five minute overtime to end in the 4-4 tie. Neither team was able to get a shot on goal in the overtime period as both teams where called for tripping penalties early in the period.
Bethel's record now stands at 5-11-2 and 2-8-2 in the MIAC. The Royals will play a non-conference game against the No. 5-ranked University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Wednesday night, marking their fifth consecutive game against a Top 10 ranked opponent. Hamline now stands at 15-1-3 and 9-1-2 and have not lost in a school record 13 consecutive games.
Friday – Hamline 4, Bethel 1
Mallory Tidona made the Pipers high powered offense work for the four goals they got in a 4-1 win over the Royals Friday night at the TRIA Rink in St. Paul. Tidona made 43 saves as the Royals trailed 2-1 through the entire second period and into the third before the Pipers scored their last two goals midway through the third.
Courtney Johnston scored Bethel's goal at 17:13 in the first period with
Bailey Thompson on the assist.
