BLAINE, Minn. - The Bethel University women's hockey team came away with their second consecutive tie with a 2-2 draw against Saint Mary's University. Bethel scored the games first and last goals in the 17th minute of both the first period and the third period but despite several close calls where unable to get the game winning goal. Bethel held a two shot advantage, 35-33 which included a 18-12 advantage in the third period.
Bri Stafne scored Bethel's first goal at 17:39 in the first, rifling a shot into the top corner off an assist from
Bailey Thompson. The Cardinals where able to get their first goal at 12:08 in the second when SMU was able to get the puck through traffic and between
Mallory Tidona's pads. The game remained 1-1 with both teams creating some chances but unable to score until the Cardinals took advantage of a power play late in the third period. At 14:28 SMU was able to take a 2-1 lead. Bethel was able to get a power play opportunity of their own with just under three minutes remaining and
Bailey Thompson knocked in a rebound in front of the net to tie the game back up for Bethel.
Kennedi Mitchell was credited with the assist on Thompson's goal. Bethel looked to get the game winner in the final minutes but a penalty with 1:13 remaining put a damper on those hopes as BU staved off a couple close calls in the final seconds. In overtime the two teams combined for seven shots on goal but again both goalies where unrelenting and the game went down as a tie, the sixth of the season for Saint Mary's and the third for Bethel.
The Royals now sit at 5-11-3 on the season and 4-4-2 since the beginning of the new year. Their MIAC record is 2-8-3. For Saint Mary's the Cardinals are now 6-8-6 overall and 3-6-4 in the MIAC. The two teams will finish the series Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Winona, Minnesota.
