CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Bethel University women's tennis was back in action following their spring break trip to Hawaii with a Sunday doubleheader in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Royals (9-2, 3-0 MIAC) pulled out a 6-3 win over Coe College (12-10, 7-1 IIAC) in the morning and followed up with a 7-2 win against Augustana College (IL) (14-5, 8-0 CCIW) in the afternoon. Both opponents were ranked in the NCAA DIII Central Region heading into the matchups.
Match one saw the Royals go 2-1 in doubles play as
Mackenzie Novak and
Jill Weinzettel took an 8-3 victory in the No. 2 match while
Sami Hindt and
Mattie Lubben won 8-6 in the No. 3 match. Hindt added a dominant 6-0, 6-0 singles win as well. Novak and Weinzetell also won their singles matches by scores of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-1 respectively.
Meghan Schuler rounded out the winning matches for BU with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the No. 6 singles match.
The Royals picked up where they left off in the second match as they swept doubles play:
Maggie Riermann and
Mattie Kidder won 8-6,
Mackenzie Novak and
Jill Weinzettel won 8-4,
Sami Hindt and
Mattie Lubben won 8-4. Singles play saw Riermann pull out a tight 6-4, 7-5 win in No. 1 singles. No. 3 singles went to Novak by a score of 6-3, 6-3 and Weinzettel won the No. 4 match 6-2, 6-1. Hindt rounded out the day for BU with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the No. 5 singles match.
"We had great doubles play today, that really carried us," Head coach
Drew Fernelius said. "We've got a week off before we kick it into gear for the most important conference matches."
The women's tennis team is back in action as they face off against their rival, the University of Northwestern. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, April 4 at 4 p.m. down the road at the UNW campus. The Eagles come into the match up with a 5-7 record.
