ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior center
Hannah Johnson became the 16th player in Bethel University women's basketball history to hit the 1,000 career point mark as the Royals picked up a MIAC road victory at Macalester 82-44.
"It's super exciting and I have my teammates to thank for all that," said Johnson of her accomplishment. "We have a week here of just practice so we are going to be ready to get at it in the gym and be ready for Carleton next Saturday and keep building off what we are doing right now."
A balanced attacked that saw eight different Royals score while shooting 51.6 percent (32-of-62) from the field aided Bethel to their first conference win of the season. Now 5-3 on the season, the Royals continue their five-game road trip at Carleton College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
Junior forward
Taite Anderson poured in a game-high 20 points with Johnson right behind her at 18 points, all of which came in the first half, and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward
Elizabeth Schwarz added 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Junior guard
Haylee Barker added a game-high six assists.
The Royals opened up the game on a 7-0 run en route to giving them an early 29-5 after one quarter of play. The offense continued to surge in the second as the Royals shot 76.9 percent from the field (10-of-13) to take a 51-18 lead into the locker room.
The Royals picked up their largest lead of the game with a layup from
Tessah Anderson at the 3:44 left in the third to make it 69-24. The Scots in the fourth narrowly outscored the Royals 10-9.
Defensively the Royals forced 33 Scot turnovers turning that into 36 points. The Royals dominated the inside game hold the edge on points in the paint at 56-22.
