Jenson Leads Royals to Overtime Thrilling Win Against Augsburg, 90-84

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – In a rematch of last season's MIAC Tournament Championship game, the Bethel University men's basketball team fought back to win an overtime thriller against previously unbeaten Augsburg, 90-84.

Junior guard Jack Jenson exploded for a career-high 34 points, 30 of which came in the second half, to go along with eight boards. Just behind him was junior guard Granger Kingland with 20 points and 10 boards. Returning to the lineup, Derek Magnuson picked up a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds with four assists.

A strong overtime following the game-tying layup by Jenson with 3.5 seconds remaining moved the Royals to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in MIAC play. Bethel returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, Dec. 5 when they travel to University of St. Thomas beginning at 7 p.m.

An electric Robertson Center expected nothing more than for it to come down to the wire. The excitement began when Jenson knocked down his fifth 3-pointer, to remain perfect behind the arc and erase a six point deficit, giving the Royals just their third lead of the night at 75-74 with 2:16 remaining. A layup on the other end by Booker Copin gave Augsburg (4-1, 1-1 MIAC) the lead right back which the Auggies would hold on to for the next 1:39.

With 28.2 seconds remaining Jenson had the opportunity to make a pair of free throws to tie it up but missed on both attempts forcing the Royals to foul. At the other end Matt Carik made the front end of a one-and-one opportunity allowing the Royals to quickly push it up court where Kingland hit a deep three with 13.6 left to pull BU within one at 79-78.

As if there was not enough drama already, the Royals quickly fouled following the make with no timeouts remaining. Coplin would go one-for-two at the charity stripe for the Auggies before Jenson pulled in the rebound to go coast-to-coast for the game tying layup at 80-80 with three seconds remaining forcing overtime.

It was all Royals in the overtime period, threes by Tyler Barker and Kingland put the icing on the top before Jenson knocked down a pair of free throws in the closing seconds giving Bethel their largest lead of the game at six.

The wheels were turning from the start as the two conference foes traded baskets to open up the back and forth affair. A 3-pointer by Kingland at the 18:43 mark gave the Royals their only lead of the first half as the Auggies led by as many as 11 before taking a 38-33 lead into the break.
