ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The Bethel University men's soccer team thought they had snatched a victory in the final seconds of double overtime as
Keagan Heckmann finished off a free kick from
Andrew Zwart but after the officials huddled they determined that the Royals were offside on the play and the goal was taken off, resulting in a 1-1 tie. The hard fought game saw the Cobbers outshoot Bethel by a slim margin, 15-12 and 7-5 in shots on goal. Bethel had a large advantage in corner kicks at 9-3 and the Cobbers committed 27 fouls to 15 for Bethel and where whistled for two yellow cards and a red card (in the 109th minute), to Bethel's one yellow.
The Cobbers scored the games first goal, 77:32 into the contest. Bethel did not wait long to respond though as
Tony Woodley scored off a corner kick from
Andrew Zwart at 80:52. The action the rest of the way was intense as both teams created chances in regulation and overtime with multiple fouls and all three yellow cards and the red card called in the game coming during the final minute of play in the second overtime. Bethel had multiple free kicks before and after the disallowed goal in the final minute but couldn't quite convert.
The tie leaves the Royals and Cobbers still tied in the MIAC standings at 1-7-1. Bethel is now 4-11-1 overall and Concordia 7-9-1. The Royals will conclude their season on Saturday when they travel to face St. Thomas at 3:30 p.m. in St. Paul.
