ST. PAUL – The Bethel University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking, 2-1 defeat in double overtime to the Macalester College Scots Saturday night. The Royals (4-10) held a 1-0 lead from the 51
st minute to the 75
th minute when the Scots (8-3-2) scored on a set piece to tie the game. Macalester scored the winner in the second overtime in the 102 minute of play after a pair of volleys in the box with the Royals making great stops but just unable to get the ball cleared out.
Bethel's goal was scored by
Brandon Martinez-Luhman on a header after a free kick from
Andrew Zwart in the 51
st minute.
Colin Hupert made multiple outstanding saves in goal for Bethel, totaling 10 in the game.
The Royals will be back in action next Saturday at home against the Carleton College Knights. The game will start at approximately 3:30 p.m. or a half hour after the women's game.
