ST. PAUL - The Bethel University men's hockey team fell on the road Friday night by a 3-1 score to the Hamline University Pipers. Hamline built a 3-0 lead through the first two periods before the Royals mounted a comeback firing off 15 third period shots to just six for the Pipers but Bethel was only able to score one goal early in the period as the Pipers hung on.
Jay Paul scored Bethel's goal with assists from Daneil Bates and
Adam Marty.
Joe Sheppard made 29 saves in net for the Royals who were outshot for the game, despite the big third period, by a 32-27 margin. Neither team was able to take advantage of multiple power plays as penalties were the story of the second period. Bethel was 0-for-6 while Hamline was 0-for-5 on the power play. A total of 10 penalties were called in the second period alone, 15 for the game, with seven on the Royals and eight on Hamline.
