Royals Take Advantage of Hamline Penalties, Roar Back for 5-4 Win

BLAINE, Minn. - The Bethel University men's hockey team overcame deficits of 3-1 and 4-2 by scoring three unanswered goals in the last 11:27 of the third period to pull out a 5-4 win over the Hamline University Pipers. The Royals took full advantage of the Pipers inability to stay out of the penalty box as three of the Royals last four goals came on the power play, including the last two scores, coming inside of five minutes remaining. Joe Sheppard made several big saves on the night and totaled 43 for the game. A total of 23 penalties were called, with 13 on Hamline and 10 on Bethel. The difference came in that Bethel was 3-for-9 on the power play and Hamline was 0-for-5. The Pipers did get a short-handed goal however in the second period which gave them a 3-1 lead at the time.

Hamline struck first just 5:17 into the game but Bethel answered back with a Will Reedy score at 13:28. Michael Piehler and Kurtis Redding assisted. The Pipers scored again before the end of the period to go up 2-1 and they held a 17-5 advantage on shots in the first. The Pipers continued to control the game in the second period holding a 18-9 shot advantage and both teams scored once. Hamline's score came first, shorthanded, to make it 3-1 before Bethel was able to draw it to 3-2 with a Jackson Purvis power play goal. Dallas Marvin and Dylan Webster set Purvis up on the play.

The Pipers opened the third period with a score just under five minutes in to go up 4-2. From there it was all Bethel as the Royals got within one score at 8:33 on a great individual effort from Adam Marty to score from a near impossible angle. Tucker Gran and Jay Paul got the puck to Marty for the assists. Dallas Marvin scored the equalizer on a power play with 4:01 remaining off assists from Johan Kling and Jackson Purvis as the Royals were on a 5-on-3 advantage. The onslaught continued for Bethel with Will Reedy scoring on the back side off a Johan Kling shot on yet another power play. Dallas Marvin also assisted on the game winner which came with just 1:42 remaining in the game. The Royals just missed adding on an empty net goal on two different occasions and Joe Sheppard made three saves down the stretch to secure the win.

The win improves Bethel to 3-18 overall and 2-10 in the MIAC. Hamline fell to 8-11-2 and 3-7-2 in the MIAC. Next weekend Bethel will take on Saint Mary's University with Friday's action taking place in Bethel University Arena beginning at 7 p.m.
