ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—Monday night games have consistently tested MIAC opponents year-after-year and tonight was no different as the league witnessed several close encounters and a pair of upsets.
Â
Among those close encounters was Bethel University's 66-62 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College, which, as a result, put BU back in first place by a half game. The Royals (18-6, 14-5 MIAC) overcame a seven-point deficit with 12:34 remaining against the Gusties (5-19, 5-14 MIAC) thanks to 14-5 run. They then closed out the contest with a 10-6 run in the final 4:38, which propelled them to the four-point victory.
Â
Â
Bethel finished the night shooting 29-of-65 (44.6 percent) from the floor and 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from downtown. Where the Royals dominated was inside, as BU outscored Gustavus 50-34 in the paint.
Â
Derek Magnuson played a large part in that, as the sophomore forward finished with a game-high 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting and seven rebounds. Right behind Magnuson was
Bridgeport Tusler, who composed 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and five rebounds.
Â
Also scoring in double figures was
Trevor Hall, who recorded 15 points, nine boards, three assists, and two blocks, and
Granger Kingland, who posted 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Â
The Royals have just one game remaining on the 2016-17 regular season schedule. They host Concordia College for a men's and women's doubleheader on Wednesday, February 15. The women tip at 5:45 p.m. and the men are scheduled to start at 7:45 p.m., but Bethel will celebrate senior night prior to the game against the Cobbers.
