Royals Early Lead Disappears in 4-2 Loss at Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team got out to a quick 1-0 lead but saw the red hot Gustavus Adolphus College Golden Gusties score three unanswered goals to take control of the game on the way to a 4-2 final score. The Royals were unable to generate double digit shots in any of the three periods while Gustavus fired off 18 in the first and 12 in the second as they outshot Bethel 38-16 for the game. Both teams had just one power play in the game with neither scoring.

Sarina Goos scored Bethel's first goal just 3:16 into the first period. Gustavus scored twice later in the first period to take the lead and then added a third consecutive goal just 1:19 into the second period. The game stayed 3-1 until Wendy Roberts scored just 52 seconds into the third period to pull the Royals within one at 3-2. Gustavus quickly answered though, less than two minutes later, to go back up 4-2 and that is where the scoring ended.

The loss leaves the Royals at 4-7-4 in the MIAC and puts their hopes of making a seventh consecutive trip the MIAC Playoffs on life support as they are now five points behind the fifth and final spot with just three games remaining. Gustavus improved to 10-2-3 as they sit just one point out of first place in the MIAC. The two teams will square off in the final home game of 2017 for the Royals at 2 p.m. from Bethel University Arena. The Royals four seniors will be honored pregame and all Bethel University Women's Hockey Alumni are invited back for Alumni Day.
