MINNEAPOLIS - The Bethel University women's hockey team fell on the road Friday night in the MIAC season opener to the Augsburg University Auggies by a 2-1 score. Augsburg got a first period power play goal which was the lone score until later in the third period when both teams scored. Michelle Klimstra made 29 saves for the Royals as Augsburg outshot Bethel 31-12.
The Auggies first score came in the seventh minute of the first period on their first power play opportunity. It would be the only power play score in the game as Bethel went 0-2 and Augsburg was 1-5 on the power play. Erika Geary tied the game up for Bethel at 14:17 in the third period with assists from Sarah Moy and Wendy Roberts. The Auggies wasted little time in responding however and taking the lead back as they scored just 21 seconds later and held on for the 2-1 victory.
The Royals and Auggies will finish the series Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Bethel University Arena.
