BLAINE, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) concluded its annual Men's Hockey Showcase with three more games at Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn. on Sunday. Augsburg improved to 2-0 with a victory over Concordia, while Saint Mary's and St. Thomas evened their records with wins against Bethel and Hamline, respectively.
SAINT MARY'S 3, BETHEL 1 | Box Score |
Following a shutout in last night's season opener, Saint Mary's (1-1) found its offense on Sunday to drop Bethel (0-2), 3-1. Jay Heinle scored the Cardinals' first goal of the year at 6:22 in the second off a Kevin Walz assist. A Tyler Mros power-play goal midway through the second frame evened things up for a moment, but the Cards answered right back with a goal of their own two minutes later. Saint Mary's tacked on one more for good measure at the 10-minute mark in the third, securing a 3-1 win.
AUGSBURG 4, CONCORDIA 1 | Box Score |
Concordia (0-1-1) got the scoring started with a power-play goal by Zach Doerring – his second of the year – in the second period; however, Augsburg's (2-0-0) offense proved to be too much to overcome, as the No. 13-ranked Auggies rallied for four unanswered goals by four different players to earn a 4-1 victory. Cobbers goalie Sam Nelson was under siege all afternoon, collecting 41 saves on 45 shots.
ST. THOMAS 3, HAMLINE 2 | Stat Link |
It was the kind of game one would expect from two of the MIAC's top hockey teams, as St. Thomas (1-1) scored a goal in every period to top Hamline (1-1), 3-2. Sophomore forward John Peterson scored the first goal of the game for the Tommies just before the four-minute mark of the first period, but the Pipers responded quickly with a Russ Jordan goal two minutes later. Drake Hunter punched in one more score before the buzzer sounded on the first period, giving Hamline a 2-1 advantage heading into intermission. A Brett Gravelle goal in the second evened the score at 2-2 and with overtime looming, Jack Christensen managed to break the tie with a goal at 17:07 in the third to secure the Tommies' first win of the season.
