BLAINE, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) dropped the puck to start the 2017-18 men's hockey season on Friday with an exciting first night of games at the 2017 MIAC Men's Hockey Showcase at Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn. Six of the MIAC's nine teams opened the season at the event, with the other three set to commence their campaigns on Saturday.

SAINT JOHN'S 5, BETHEL 1 | Box Score |
The Johnnies (1-0) scored early and often in the opening contest, recording the first goal of the 2017-18 season just 42 seconds into the new year. Defenseman Cole Souto was credited with the power-play goal for Saint John's. Fellow sophomore Brady Heppner finished as the game's leading scorer, collecting a pair of goals and assisting on two more. Senior forward Jackson Purvis scored the lone goal for the Royals (0-1).

HAMLINE 4, ST. OLAF 3 (OT) | Box Score |
The Pipers (1-0) outlasted the Oles (0-1) 4-3 in overtime, thanks to a pair of goals by Mitch McPherson and a game-winner off the stick of Garret Schmitz. St. Olaf got the scoring started just past the 12-minute mark in the first period with a power-play goal by All-Conference forward Drew Otto, but Hamline answered right back with a power-play goal of its own courtesy of another All-MIAC forward, Russ Jordan. McPherson scored a pair in the second period, while the Oles rallied back in the third two Gordon Wells goals. Schmitz tallied the game-winner for Hamline at the 1:43 mark in overtime.

AUGSBURG 3, GUSTAVUS 2 (OT) | Box Score |
The No. 13-ranked team in the nation got an opening night scare, as the defending MIAC Playoff champion Augsburg Auggies (1-0) were pushed to the limit in a 3-2 overtime victory against Gustavus (0-1). Augsburg's Alex Rodriguez got the scoring started just under seven minutes into the first period but the Gusties would not quit, scoring a pair of goals in the second to take a 2-1 lead. That's when AHCA All-American forward Nate Flynn took over, tying the game 16 seconds in the third period before sneaking the game-winner past Gustavus goalie Chris Amsden in overtime.

MORE ACTION SET FOR SATURDAY
The 2017 MIAC Hockey Showcase continues with three more games on Saturday. St. Thomas will take the ice for the first time this season at 6:30 p.m. against St. Olaf on Rink 1. Concordia will also make its 2017-18 debut against Gustavus at 7:00 p.m. on Rink 2 and Saint Mary's will open its season against Saint John's at 7:30 p.m. on Rink 4.
