BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team and the Augsburg College Auggies hooked up in another intense, physical battle on Saturday night with the Auggies coming out on top by a 4-2 final score. Bethel pulled within one goal at 3-2 early in the third period and fought hard to get the game tying score but were unable to get it before the Auggies added an empty netter to put the game away.
Augsburg struck first just 44 seconds into the game with their first goal. Bethel was able to tie the game up four minutes later however as
Peter Barral scored his third goal of the series with the Auggies. The defending MIAC champions where able to take back the lead before the end of the first at 2-1 and then extended their lead to 3-1 with a goal at the start of the second period. The Auggies nearly extended their lead several times in the remaining of the second period but the Royals eventually garnered some momentum in the third period as they scored to pull within one. At 7:19 in the third,
Michael Bond converted a two-on-one with
Kurtis Redding. Bethel was able to outshoot Augsburg 8-3 over the final 12 minutes of the game but were just unable to find the back of the net. The Auggies empty net goal with just 12 seconds remaining ended the Royals hopes.
Bethel falls to 1-10-2 on the year and 0-4-2 in the MIAC while Augsburg improved to 9-2-2 and 4-1-1 in the MIAC. The Royals will take a break from conference action next weekend as they will travel to take on the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Friday night and then head north to play the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday night.
