Bethel Volleyball Goes Unbeaten on Opening Night

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—The Bethel University volleyball team began their 2016 season in style, as BU went undefeated in two matches played Friday evening. The No. 12 Royals (2-0, 0-0 MIAC) topped Nebraska Wesleyan University 3-1 before defeating Willamette University 3-0 in the final contest of the night.

Kristin Stern was sensational throughout Bethel's debut, as the junior middle blocker tallied 40 kills during the seven sets played (5.71 kills/set). Stern posted a .556 hitting percentage and finished with eight blocks—one solo, seven assisted.

Katie Lubben led the team in assists, accumulating 56 between the two matches including 36 against NWU. Newcomer Holly Ellwanger also added 40, including a team-high 22 against Willamette.

Senior Carlee Hoppe amassed 28 digs throughout the night, which led all Bethel players. Hoppe also collected 22 kills and three block assists.

Perhaps the unsung hero of the night was Callie Sinclair, who led the team in both matches for total serve attempts. Sinclair posted 26 attempts in the opener against the Prairie Wolves and 21 against the Bearcats. Sinclair also stuffed the stat sheet with 14 kills and 13 digs.

The Royals jump immediately back into competition Saturday afternoon, when they host Wartburg College (RV) at noon and Wheaton College at 2 p.m.
