Softball Splits Season-Finale against Carleton on Senior Day

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.—The Bethel University softball team ended 2016 with a series split against Carleton in the season finale. The Royals (18-20, 12-10 MIAC) routed the Knights (10-28, 4-18 MIAC) 11-3 in Monday's opener, but fell in the second game by the same score.

BU put up four runs in the first inning of game one, four runs in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth to end the contest in 5.0 innings thanks to the eight-run rule. Several seniors recorded some of their best performances on the celebratory day.

Casey Marcus had an impressive all-around day, as the senior outfielder went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and four RBI. In addition, Marcus showed great defense with a diving catch in center field.

Other sensational performances by senior players included Caroline Kivisto's 2-for-3 day with a walk, two runs scored, and two RBI, Abbie Bircher's 3-for-4 effort with a run and an RBI, and Kalyn Sorensen's 0-for-1 result with two walks, three runs, and one RBI. Morever, Anna Nichols finished 2-for-2 with a walk.

Lindsay Edeen went the distance in game one, allowing seven hits and three walks in 5.0 innings pitched. She also struck out four.

The Royals started a complete cast of seniors in game two, with all nine seniors taking a spot in the field of play. Unfortunately for Bethel, the move didn't pay off with a series sweep. Instead, Carleton put up seven runs in the second inning—all with two outs—and four runs in the third. The Royals cut the lead with two in the fourth and one in the fifth, but BU couldn't keep the Knights from run-ruling them in their season finale.

Kalyn Sorensen finished her career with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate with one walk, one RBI, and one run scored. Anna Nichols hit a pinch-hit single that scored two runs and Micayla Moore went 1-for-3 with one run scored.

Karli Persson got the start in game two and gave up eight earned runs in 3.0 innings pitched. Persson surrendered nine hits and three walks, while striking out three. Lindsay Edeen pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
