NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Bethel University women's tennis team traveled to St. Olaf on Saturday for their final match of the regular season, ultimately losing the decision 8-1. The Royals finished 19-4 on the season and 6-4 in conference play as they prepare for the first round of the postseason tournament.
"We really had some chances today but we just couldn't get it done in doubles. I'm proud of the effort we showed but we will have to rebound quickly with the playoffs starting," said head coach
Drew Fernelius.
After losing the opening match of the day 2-8, the Royals had their opportunities in the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches. In the end, they suffered narrow defeats in both contests, losing 7-9 and 6-8 respectively. This result put the Oles ahead 3-0 which meant the Royals needed a big performance in singles.
Despite several close matches, the Royals could only capture one point in singles as St. Olaf capitalized on their momentum from the doubles portion of the competition. Jill Weintzettel recorded the lone triumph for Bethel in a third-set tiebreaker, getting the Royals on the board. Teammates
Abigail Anderson and
Sydney Parkinson also forced three-set matches but could not come away with victories.
As a result of the loss, the Royals will travel back to Northfield on Tuesday to face the Oles in the first round of the MIAC Playoffs.
