Royals Rebound with Road Sweep over Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn.—Bethel University's baseball team won two very different games Saturday in Northfield against Carleton College. The Royals (15-12, 5-5 MIAC) dominated the Knights (9-17, 5-5 MIAC) by a final score of 7-0 in the 1 p.m. contest and then overcame a 5-1 deficit after the initial six innings of game two with seven unanswered runs in the final three frames.

Tyler Heitmann pitched a masterpiece in game one, allowing six hits and zero walks, while also striking out six in the complete-game victory. BU's bats spotted him three runs in the second, thanks to a bases-loaded triple by Esteban Velasco, and then added an insurance run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Carleton led the Royals 5-1 after the first six innings of game two, but Bethel knotted the game at 5-5 with a four-run seventh and then took the lead with a three-run ninth. BU started the seventh with two singles and a double, then tacked on two more with an error and a sacrifice fly. They then opened the ninth with a double and a run scored on an error, followed by a single, an error, a double, and a sacrifice fly.

Carson Selin got the win on the mound in game two, as he struck out four batters in the final two innings. Selin relieved Michael Bohlke, who pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings in relief.

Esteban Velasco had the biggest bat for the Royals. The No. 9 hitter finished 5-for-7 with two runs scored and six RBI in the two games combined. John Horner, who got the start at third base, was right behind, going 4-for-6 with a double and four runs scored.

Now 15-12 on the season and 5-5 in MIAC play, Bethel seeks revenge against St. Scholastica Sunday in Duluth. The Saints stole a 6-2 win away from BU in the second game of the season, despite scoring five unearned runs in the first inning.  First pitch between the Royals and CSS is scheduled for 1 p.m.
