DULUTH, Minnesota—History repeated itself for the Bethel baseball team Sunday, as the Royals (15-13) couldn't overcome St. Scholastica's first-inning runs. BU, who fell to the Saints (15-7) 2-6 in the second game of the season—despite outscoring them 2-1 in the final eight innings—allowed CSS to score three runs in the first frame Sunday, but fell just short by a final score of 3-2.
BU scored one run in the sixth and another in the ninth.
Matt Conrad tallied an RBI-double in the sixth inning that scored
Bret Neuville. The Royals then tried to put together a late-game rally in the ninth, but fell just short. Conrad began the frame with a single, but a ground ball double play had the bases empty with two outs.
Ryan Evenson then drew a two out walked and pinch-runner,
Jordan Jasik, stole second before
Sam Horner hit an RBI-single to center. Horner then stole second, but a game-ending strikeout ended Bethel's comeback attempt.
Matt Conrad led the Royals at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Bret Neuville was the only other player with multiple hits (2-for-4 with one run).
Jarad Watts and
Sam Horner were the only other players to record a hit.
Houston Droel got the start Sunday, allowing three runs on six hits and zero walks, while striking out six in 4.0 innings pitched.
Jake Hanzalik and
John Eischens both pitched 2.0 innings and collectively surrendered zero runs.
Bethel gets back to the diamond Wednesday, when they travel to the newly constructed CHS Field to take on Hamline University. First pitch against the Pipers is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
