Bethel Softball Splits Outdoor Series with St. Scholastica

ROSEVILLE, Minn.—The Bethel University softball team couldn't have asked for a better day to kick off their outdoor season Sunday, as the Royals (2-2) played host to the College of St. Scholastica at the University of Northwestern for a nonconference doubleheader in 60-degree weather. BU dropped the opener to the Saints (3-3) by a final score of 0-7 before coming back in the second game to win 4-2.

The Royals mustered just three hits in Sunday's opener, while the Saints collected 11. Lindsay Edeen, who picked up her first win of the season last Saturday against No. 21-ranked Central College, allowed six runs, one walk, and six strikeouts.

Game two wasn't much different statistically, as Bethel was out-hit 8-5 in the second seven-inning contest. But despite being outhit, BU outscored the Saints 4-2 throughout the game.

Micalya Moore was the hero in game two, as the senior third baseman hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning with both Casey Marcus and Ashton Brask (running for Anna Nichols) on base. That proved to be enough for the Royals, but Jessica Davis helped BU add an insurance run in the sixth when reaching on a blunder by the CSS shortstop. Moore scored on the play.

Both Moore and Nichols finished the contest 2-for-3 at the plate, while Abby Bircher was 1-for-4. Moore added three RBI's and two runs scored to her final stat line.

Karli Persson improved to 1-1 on the season inside the circle. The senior righty allowed two runs on eight hits and one walk, while striking out four.

Bethel's outdoor games today should wet the Royals' appetite for their annual spring break trip to Florida next week. BU leaves Friday to Clermont, Florida, where they'll play 10 games over seven days, beginning with a pair of nonconference tests against Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Wittenberg University on Saturday, March 12.
