The Bethel University baseball, softball, and tennis teams are all down in Florida, while family and friends that didn't come South are enjoying record-high temperatures back in Minnesota. Quite the curve ball!
And yet despite the beautiful weather back home, the teams traveling have been treated to excellent weather and exceptional competition.
BaseballThe Royals have already played four games while down in Ft. Myers, Florida and have come away with a 3-1 record during their trip, which improves them to 5-2 on the season. Bethel swept Plymouth State University Friday by final scores of
8-3 and
11-3. They then split Saturday's contests-first an
8-5 loss to Johns Hopkins University, followed by an
8-7 victory over Rockford University. Friday's sweep over the PSU Panthers earned head coach
Brian Raabe his 100th career victory.
Some of the top individual performers from the trip so far include
John Eischens,
Bryce Marquardt,
Tyler Heitmann, and
Matt Conrad. Eischens earned his first career win in relief, by allowing no hits, no runs, and one walk, while striking out three in 3.2 innings pitched. Marquardt has gone 9-for-17 with four runs and three RBI.
Tyler Heitmann pitched 7.2 innings against one of the toughest teams across the nation. Heitmann allowed one run and seven strikeouts in the first seven innings, but finished the game with five earned runs credited to him. Conrad has gone 6-for-15 at the plate with three runs scored and seven driven in.
SoftballThe BU softball team began their 2016 spring break journey with a pair of games Saturday. The Royals led Worcester Polytechnic Institute 2-0 early when
Caroline Kivisto clubbed a ball over the fence in her first at-bat of the trip.
Anna Nichols then evened the game at 5-5 with her three-run home run in the third inning, but WPI scored two runs in the bottom of the third to secure the
7-5 victory. Bethel trailed Wittenberg University 0-2 after the first four innings, but the Tigers added five more runs and went on to defeat the Royals 7-0.
Kivisto finished the first game 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI.
Abbie Bircher was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
